Pentathlon is our main elementary community day for PK-4th grade that provides fun, memory-based learning and activities across several subject areas - Scripture, Science, History, Geography, Timeline, Math, English Grammar, Latin & Greek Roots, and Hymns. This memory work is meant to be a supplemental help to the basics of at-home learning in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Each week, students engage in casual speeches, exploratory projects and experiments, fine arts creation and expression, games and activity -- all engaging the senses and solidifying learning alongside friends!

We celebrate birthdays, accomplishments, and go on field trips together through the year. Parents are required to be in class/community with their students, engaging and providing help where needed. On-site, paid childcare is available for younger siblings. Compass community discount available for Claritas curriculum.

It's also the classical way of approaching the skills of rhetoric to focus on the thinking that leads to good writing. Lost Tools of Writing provides a thorough breakdown of skills, tools and basic principles to learn and use in the step-by-step process of developing the art of communication. The Art of Argument - (Intro to Informal Logic)

The goal of this class is for students to learn to be truth seekers who approach disagreement, debate, and argument from a point of humility by seeking what is true without being distracted by the desire to be right. Students will be provided opportunities to practice the virtue of prudence as they build the tools necessary to learn how to reason well. They will learn to detect 28 logical fallacies in their own statements, the arguments of others and identify the flawed arguments found so frequently in commercials, articles, books, movies, songs, TV shows, everyday discussions, and other media.

Why study logic? Isn’t logic just common sense? As a matter of fact, it is not. Logic is a specific form of reasoning and we study and practice it in order to walk in the footsteps of a logical and reasoning God.

This course covers formal logic and aims to equip students with tools for reasoning, forming arguments, recognizing weak arguments, and ultimately, discerning truth from falsehood. It will give them knowledge and skills to protect them from being, “children tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” (Ephesians 4:14) The text emphasizes the practical and real-world application of soundly structured deductive logic.

This course is recommended for students who have studied logical fallacies as in The Art of Argument, but it is not a requirement.

This class is geared towards 6th and 7th graders. Our goal is to ease students into middle school level work with fun, engaging experiments alongside concepts and notetaking in class. There is so much to learn from God’s creation, and we will have a fun year exploring it together through science!

The course covers the scientific work of natural philosophers who lived from about 600 BC to the early AD 1500s. It concentrates mostly on what these ancient scientists got right, but it does spend some time discussing what they got wrong, because even the mistakes that scientists make can sometimes advance our understanding of the natural world. Of course, when the students are taught something that is now known to be incorrect, they are made aware of this fact!

Because the course covers science as it was developed, it covers a wide range of topics including human anatomy, medicine, optics, heliocentrism, geocentrism, sound, music, magnets, how steam is used to generate power, the motion of objects through a medium, combustion, levers, pulleys, plant growth, plant anatomy, tree ring dating, the atmosphere, astronomy, the basics of graphing, plastics, density, water flow, friction, and erosion. Throughout the course, students learn that most of the great scientists who lived from AD 500 to the end of this time period were devout Christians who did science because they thought they could learn more about God by studying His handiwork.

This class will use a variety of curriculums in our middle school study of U.S. history and world/U.S. geography. History class time will be focused on discussion, analysis, and interaction with events through various projects/activities. Retention of specific information (see 200 Questions below) will be encouraged through drills and games. At-home assignments will be reading (text and some original documents) and research, comprehension questions and enrichment activities.

Geography III will be a world tour of learning and identification of key places, features, and people of countries learned in Geography I and II. In-class and at-home work will include reading and comprehension questions, research and fact finding, labeling and drawing of maps using the Robinson Map Project. The year will also include a thorough review of U.S. states and capitals, and a regional cuisine signup from each family.

Did you know that over half of all English words have Greek or Latin roots? When you enter the world of technology, the number reaches over 90 percent! No matter what field of study or profession your student chooses, they will benefit from diving deeper into understanding the profound influence of these languages in our own mother tongue. In class, students will discuss the root words, use dictionaries to look up derivatives, and review through fun games and activities.

La Clase Divertida (Level 3)

A Complete Children's Conversational Spanish Language/Cultural (Latin America) Instruction Program for everyone! The Level 3 set is the third part of a three part set Children's Conversation Spanish Language Instruction series. Upon completing all three years of La Clase Divertida Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 , (with individual conversational mastery considered), this curriculum in total, introduces approximately the same material and practical skill level as a High School Spanish I Conversation class.

This group is for students ages 9-12 years who are eager to compete through robotics. This team will get together twice a week. On Monday we will focus on Innovation Project and on Wednesday we will focus on Robot Design. Our first qualifying competition is usually held on the month of December where we hope to compete. If our team qualifies, we will then move to state championship held in Portland, OR. This group is formed to help students build confidence, communication, problem solving skills, and conflict resolution. As a team, we will fundraise to show community involvement and to show leadership. Our time will be filled with fun, creativity and learning STEM together!

Institute for Excellence in Writing will prepare your student to take notes, retell stories, summarize references and expand their vocabulary to create amazing essays. This class will provide clear step-by-step instructions for each lesson provided in the IEW curriculum to be built on at home.

Although the main focus will be writing, grammar will be another component of this class. During class, your student will review the grammar concepts from Pentathlon and put them to use in their writing and grammar workbooks. Instruction and in-class expectation will be aimed for 8th grade, but can be tailored down for 7th grade, or up for 9th grade. For high school credit, parents may want to bump up expectations of testing and quality of lab reporting during your at-home studies.

Regular homework will be reading, studying, and taking notes through half a chapter every week, completing lab write ups started in class, and other sporadic activities assigned to be fun together with family or to engage students with the material at home.  At the end of every chapter, there will be the additional opportunity to review material at home through online Kahoot! games for class fun and prizes.

This laboratory-based earth science course covers the general properties of the earth’s geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere.  Students learn about all the sections of the geosphere (such as core, mantle, crust, etc.) and then they study each in more detail.  When studying the earth’s crust, they learn about minerals, rocks, and the rock cycle.  Plate tectonics is then covered, which leads to a discussion of seismic waves, earthquakes, and volcanoes.  Students then learn about fossils and how both uniformitarians and catastrophists interpret those fossils as well as the sedimentary rocks in which they are found.  A discussion that compares uniformitarianism and catastrophism follows, in which the strengths and weaknesses of each view are covered.

After that, the hydrosphere is discussed.  Students first learn the properties of water such as polarity, the ability to hydrogen bond, and heat capacity.  That leads to a discussion of the hydrologic cycle and residence time.  Students then learn about the waves, currents, and tides in the ocean.  They then move on to the ice reservoirs on the earth and then the freshwater reservoirs.  Water in the air is the last part of the hydrosphere that is covered.  The atmosphere is then discussed, including the composition of air, the sections of the atmosphere, temperature gradients, and pollutants.  This leads to a discussion of weather.  The course ends with two chapters on space, one that covers the solar system and one that covers the universe as a whole.

In addition to covering concepts from the reading in class, there will be weekly lab exercises.  Specific minerals, rocks, and fossils allow students to do very detailed experiments related to the geosphere.  These include mineral tests, rock analyses, fossil studies, density investigations, and magnetic property explorations.  Students also get hands-on experience with waves, gases, wind, water purification, cloud formation, the Coriolis effect, precipitation, and acid/base interactions.

This study hall is designed for students on campus, who are not otherwise in classes, to utilize their time effectively for completing schoolwork and assignments. Each student is expected to bring schoolwork to complete during this time, and it is up to the parent to make sure they are completing what they are supposed to be completing. Please no art projects or computers unless prior permission is given. An adult will be present in the classroom if questions are asked or help is needed. While this is not a tutoring session, it is an opportunity for the kids to utilize this supervised time and space with their peers.

BJU Press Heritage Studies 6 focuses on a broad period of history, beginning with Creation and extending to around AD 2000. It primarily covers ancient world civilizations and cultures, including those in Egypt, Israel, China, Greece, Africa, the Mayas, Rome, and the Middle Ages. Class will use BJU Heritage Studies 6: Ancient Civilizations 4th Edition as the scope and sequence and main reference for historical events, though for families looking for further research, additional outside sources are encouraged.  Open to 6th and 7th graders, this class encourages parents to tailor the amount of home reading/research for their student, based on the syllabus and topics provided. Please visit: BJU Ancient Civilizations

The last 15 minutes of class will be set aside to review or introduce science memory work from Pentathlon to help students connect ideas and concepts learned throughout the year.

The beginning of history is given in the Bible’s creation account, and this book uses the days of creation as a way of introducing a wide range of scientific concepts including the nature of light, energy conservation, the properties of air and water, introductory botany, our solar system, basic zoology, and some aspects of human anatomy and physiology. We will explore figurative language devices and learn to use them to create more vivid and descriptive writing. No homework will be assigned, and children will also have room to share their works. For younger siblings on campus at this time. Rotation of parents to lead playing the audio CDs of the Story of the World chapter that corresponds to that week's Claritas memory work, while providing coloring pages or other quiet hands-on activity.

Nominal Fee will be shared toward purchasing of class supplies.

This group is for students ages 9-12 years who are eager to compete through robotics. This team will get together twice a week. On Monday we will focus on Innovation Project and on Wednesday we will focus on Robot Design. Our first qualifying competition is usually held on the month of December where we hope to compete. If our team qualifies, we will then move to state championship held in Portland, OR. This group is formed to help students build confidence, communication, problem solving skills, and conflict resolution. As a team, we will fundraise to show community involvement and to show leadership. Our time will be filled with fun, creativity and learning STEM together!

Participants gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today's students and teachers build a better future together. Our three divisions inspire youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics.

A friendly competition is at the heart of Challenge, as teams of students ages 9-16* engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering - building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game.

This weekly class will be a combination of a fun but structured public speaking course, and a unit study on the U.S. Constitution through the assembly of an interactive notebook. It will be a relaxed afternoon, workshop-based atmosphere of collaboration and learning alongside friends throughout the year. 

In addition to our regular learning/prep weeks, we will also go out in the community to trade service for the opportunity to practice in front of different audiences so as to knock out some of those jitters!

In this twelve-week course, middle- and high-school students learn memory and delivery techniques as they write and present five speeches: self-introductory, narrative, expository, persuasive, and impromptu. Students evaluate recorded speeches in preparation for self-evaluation. This self-explanatory program helps students become competent and confident public speakers.

In this class, we will be reading and discussing several British novels and writing/sharing four papers over the course of the year. I have not solidified the list yet, but these novels are in the running: Jane Eyre, Frankenstein, Persuasion, Heart of Darkness, A Tale of Two Cities, Pride and Prejudice, and Wuthering Heights. The class discussions would be led by Junior and Senior students with a parent attending who has read the selection and is willing to jump in to help with classroom management and/or facilitating discussion. Freshmen and Sophomores may be required to help lead discussions. These reading selections are more difficult than previous years, and the pace at which we read will be more rigorous. Students will also have a Bible passage to memorize each month and an optional Bible reading plan to follow.
